We opened the Amersham Mad Squirrel Tap & Bottle Shop at 5:00pm on the 19th November 2015. With the exception of one chain pub, the top half of Amersham (Amersham on the Hill) had been without a drinking establishment for many years. The Red Squirrel Brewery Shop, as it was originally known was welcomed by the local community with open arms and a great thirst for the contemporary independent beers we sell.
Since that day 18 months ago our little outlet has cemented itself as a must visit destination in Amersham. The local (and not so local) residents buy hundreds of bottles from us every week to take home and every evening the outlet is crammed full of people enjoying great beers and having a good time. On sunny days, beer lovers spill out of the front door and onto our benches to soak up the rays.
It is a wonderful venue, in a wonderful town, but it has a major drawback, namely that it is too small to cope with demand and has been for some time, but we have a solution.
Early this year the unit to the side of the Amersham Tap & Bottle Shop, that has previously been a Thai restaurant, became suddenly and unexpectedly empty. After some lengthy discussions, number crunching and planning we are very pleased to be able to finally officially reveal that we will be knocking through and expanding into the space. Mad Squirrel Tap & Bottle Shop Amersham is getting bigger & better than ever before!
The extra space will enable us to more than double our seating capacity indoors and outdoors, install a pizza kitchen, reinstall a coffee machine (in a way that is more workable than before), add more toilet facilities and install a couple of additional keg taps. To be able to have the space to do this whilst simultaneously not needing to compromise our take-out offering is fantastic. We are so excited!
Work is beginning next week (commencing June 5th) and will realistically take around 3 or 4 weeks to complete (Don’t hold us to that though). In that time, we will try to keep the outlet open as much as possible, with minimal disruptions. However, we will inevitably have to shut for at least a couple of days at some point in that time. So, apologies to all the Amersham customers in advance for that. The finished results will be well worth the few dry days though, as the community will end up with a beer destination in their town to really be proud of!
Despite the changes, many aspects of the Amersham Tap & Bottle Shop will remain unchanged. The dedication to providing a fantastic customer experience will still be at the forefront of what we do. The team will still be led by Rob, an all-round top guy, total beer nut, and Amersham’s Manager since day one. Several new roles will be created by the expansion which will be advertised on our careers page in due course. Opening hours may marginally change within our current licensed hours, but we will not be becoming a late-night destination. Our focus remains on community, inclusivity, flexibility, a good atmosphere and great drinks.
Amersham’s social media will be posting frequently with further details and updates as the work is being carried out so make sure you are following them on Facebook and Twitter And we will do a follow up blog to show you around when it’s all finished.
